Coming this winter in North America

Now that I've got that out of the way, time for a stealth Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Appreciation Thread.
For whatever reason a few of you think that I hate Pokemon. I don't! I bought Pokemon X, didn't I? I guess I'm just not a big fan of the turn-based battles in the main Pokemon games. That said, I fucking love Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Maybe it's mostly just the Mystery Dungeon aspects of the games that I enjoy, but pair it up with the Pokemon world and it becomes even better!

I've only played Explorers of Time but while I was expecting a mediocre Pokemon spinoff I ended up with a surprisingly fun game with pleasant graphics a shockingly great story. Seriously, that game probably has the best story out of any Pokemon game ever. And what other game actually lets you play as a Pokemon? Okay, a bunch of them but Mystery Dungeon actually gave them all their own unique personalities instead of just having them repeat their names over and over again. Gates to Infinity later came out on the 3DS but unfortunately it wasn't as good as the previous games so I avoided it. Etrian Mystery Dungeon recently came out too and I considered getting it despite not being a big fan of the Etrian Odyssey games, but when this new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game was announced I said "Screw that, I'll just wait for the Pokemon game!"

Now who knows, maybe this game will turn out bad like the last one, but I won't lose hope! Besides, if it does stink then I'll at least have Etrian Mystery Dungeon to fall back on (and that's an Atlus game so you know it'll be on sale for super cheap in no time).

Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone else here played a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game and what your thoughts are about it.

Hakudamashi

I played the GBA one and got horribly bored out of my fucking mind
They're pretty tho.
OR ELSE!
Compliments to our Goddess for this piece of superspecialawesome!

Only played Blue Rescue Team. That game is mostly known for it's music.

I love how everyone who's played Explorers of Time, Darkness or The Sky loves the series while everyone who has only played Red and Blue Rescue Team are eh on it.

...and no one has played Gates to Infinity.

The Explorers Of trilogy isn't a sequel to the Rescue Team games so you guys should play one of them if you get the chance.

I think they still count as sequels even though they're not continuations of the same story.

And I kinda doubt that the Explorers trilogy was that big of an improvement over the Rescue Team games. Some people just aren't into these sorts of dungeon crawling games.

Anyway, I hope Super Mystery Dungeon has proper online multiplayer. Hey, maybe this will be the game that jkid finally plays with me!

If I recall all the games have had online multiplayer in some form.

I want to be able to make my own dungeons and set missions up in them.

I don't think so. In Explorers you could take on someone's rescue mission by typing in an insanely long password but there was no true multiplayer mode.

And making your own dungeons would be neat, but the dungeons in these games are too simple so you wouldn't really be able to make anything interesting.

Couldn't you do that in the Rescue Rangers games too?

Well the real fun would be placing traps and Pokemon in each room a create fun little arenas to fight in. Not to mention SMD could easily add new features to flesh out the function.

I think there was a dungeon in the Explorers games where you would get to a certain floor and you would always find a TM (I think) hidden behind a locked door which made you go after the key. You could easily make puzzles requiring you to find keys to advance.

I know nothing about those games.

I guess, but that still wouldn't make custom dungeons better than the randomly-generated ones, especially since you have an infinite supply of randomly-generated dungeons but you'd have to manually create/download custom dungeons.

I disagree. I'd like to think that dungeons with thought put behind them would be fun in their own right in this type of game, especially once you've gotten bored of the random generator and need something a bit more creative to play.

But you can't really be creative in these games. Even if they gave you more objects to work with, it would be hard to make unique dungeons that are distinct from the randomly-generated ones.

jkid101094

Clearly you don't have a good enough imagination.

I have a good imagination, it's just that these games do not give me the tools to express my imagination in an interesting way.

jkid101094

And yet I still disagree. I really think we could have something great with the feature.

Well, it's not like it would take anything away from the game.

Apparently Gates to Infinity let you take pictures of stuff with the 3DS camera and convert them into dungeons. I don't even know how that would work.

jkid101094

It's really dumb. Basically you take a picture of any round object and depending on the colors and size of it you get a different randomly generated dungeon. I guess the image taken is converted into a seed or something, I'm not sure.

Having Pokemon jump into a hidden door in your plate of waffles is a pretty funny idea though. That or a Pokemon plush.

Were you ever interested in getting that Etrian Mystery Dungeon game, or do you only care about the Pokemon aspects of these games?

jkid101094

Pokemon is what attracts me to these games specifically, but I've heard good things about Etrian Odyssey. I might play it one day but not before Bravely Default or it's sequel.

Getting back to the point though, I'm hoping SMD has all 721 Pokemon as opposed to the other games which omitted everything that hadn't been formally announced (Rescue Rangers, Explorers) or just omitted Pokemon based on what models they wanted to make (Gates to Infinity).

They'll probably include some Mega Evolutions that haven't been announced yet as well as whatever Gen 6 Pokemon are remaining, but I doubt there will be any Gen 7 Pokemon.

jkid101094

Well I spoke nothing of Gen 7, but it would be interesting to have the next generation debut in a spin-off title. I just hope they include all the already established mons.

Every Pokemon is in the game and you can choose to play as every starter, as well as Pikachu and Riolu (because of course). It already looks better than Gates to Infinity.

jkid101094

I saw a Lilligant in the trailer. They must know about our undying love.

Or they just put every Pokemon in the game.

jkid101094

Every Pokemon was not shown in that trailer, meaning Lilligant had to be hand picked to appear.

They showed like a hundred Pokemon in that trailer. A Lilligant way in the background is nothing more than a coincidence.

The camera looks way too zoomed in just like Gates to Infinity, but it's kinda nice that they're bringing back hunger and the personality quiz.

Shilz

Convinced to buy this.
loved gates to infinity.
but they need to give more bag space if they wanna add food. :p
Awesome by accident- Profishâ„¢.

Release date is November 20th in North America.

Honestly, as much as I want this game I'm probably gonna skip it and just get Etrian Mystery Dungeon instead. I mean, that game is already on sale for $30 ($38 for me due to shitty Canadian dollar :( ) on the eShop and it'll only get cheaper, whereas Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is gonna be full price for a long time (at $50 CDN :( ). Hell, Gates to Infinity is still $35 (I don't even wanna know the CDN price) on the eShop! Hopefully the Canadian dollar recovers soon so that when Etrian Mystery Dungeon goes on sale for $20 I can actually get it at that price.
