After 1998's Epic Fail of a movie.

Toho (Japan) gives the license for a godzilla movie once again to an america company.
Kinda.

Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures (The Dark Knight, 2012, Clash Of The Titans) co-produce a new american godzilla movie with release in 2012.

Even a screenshot of the new Godzilla Model got leaked.

Burbank, CA – March 29, 2010 – Legendary Pictures announced today that they will develop and produce a new film based on Toho Company's famed GODZILLA character. Through the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a movie inspired by Toho's Godzilla, a franchise the Japanese company created and has nurtured for over fifty years.

Toho's GODZILLA franchise boasts one of the most widely recognized film creatures worldwide, resulting in a series of books, television programs, video games and more than 25 films worldwide. Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible. The company will, in the near future, announce a filmmaker to helm the film for an intended 2012 release. The film will fall under the company's co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. Toho will distribute the film in Japan.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

"Godzilla is a signature Japanese character which we have nurtured over the years. It is a great honor to reach an agreement with Legendary Pictures, the parent to many a blockbuster film, and we are delighted in rebooting the character together to realize its much anticipated return by fans from all over the world," comments Hideyuki Takai, President of Toho Co., Ltd. "We are anxious to find out where Godzilla's new stomping will take us."

"Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known. We have enjoyed a great deal of success together to date and this newest opportunity represents yet another chance for us to collaborate on a property that is very clearly in their wheelhouse," said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

In addition to Legendary, producers on the new film will be Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers. Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will Executive Produce.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2011:

Updates

Gareth Edwards' first monster movie, Monsters, hit Blu-ray this week and while promoting the release, the conversation obviously veered toward his plans for Legendary Pictures' reboot of Godzilla, which he's set to direct. Edwards obviously can't say much in the way of specifics, but assures fans that the franchise will be handled with respect. Read his quotes after the jump.

Edwards spoke to Shock Till You Drop about the project and chose his words very carefully. After all, he's working for one of the most secretive production companies in town, Legendary, which handles most of the DC projects for Warner Brothers (The Dark Knight Rises, Superman, etc.)

QuoteI guess I will say I'm highly aware – and everyone involved is incredibly aware – of everyone's opinions on what this film has to do and what it has to be. And no one will do anything but the right thing. Without addressing anything specific, everyone knows how important is to get it right.

Shock got Edwards to confirm that he's not writing the project (though he wouldn't say who was) and then asked about his relationship to the whole Godzilla franchise.

QuoteMy earliest memories was channel 4, they showed them every Friday night. As a kid I wasn't quite sure about the dubbing, the English-dubbed versions. They threw me for a bit. I love science fiction and, well I call them B movies but they're not, but I love '60s and '70s sci-fi. But these would come on and be dubbed and it would take my kid brain to adjust to the dubbing. It took me some time to get through that.

Edwards also talked to the London Evening Standard and echoed many of those sentiments.

QuoteEveryone involved knows what the film has to be, what's important to me is that, as well as spectacle, you have to give a shit about what's happening and why.

Armed with a teeny tiny budget for Monsters, Edwards was still able to give that film a fairly grand scope. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is confident he'll do the same with a much bigger budget on Godzilla. Then again, Roland Emmerich's Godzilla was pretty epic and we all know what that film was like.

Do you trust Edwards' with this one?

Don't.
Just, don't even.

About fucking time. Better be a lot more Godzilla and a lot less humans in the movie, though.

His roar sounds a lot better here. Maybe I just needed to hear it come out of his mouth.

Yeahh, it's the same roar as before.
Infact, they've been using the same sample for all trailers.
