Title: Favourite bands that nobody has ever heard of
Post by: Elija2 on February 04, 2014, 03:31:26 PM
In this thread lets post songs from obscure bands that we love.

The two bands I'll be posting have one thing in common: their music was featured in Jet Set Radio Future! Actually, I discovered many of my favourite bands through the Jet Set Radio games in some way, either by having a song in those games or by being associated with a band that had a song in those games.

Anyway, first up is Guitar Vader. They were a Japanese indie rock band and they're one of my favourite bands of all time. I love almost all of their songs but I guess I'll only post some highlights:

Docu-mentary Kiss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dlHGqhUKpU)
Perfect Bird (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-okcNtsWw0)
Soft (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fLu-PM5T7E)

Next is Cibo Matto. These ladies aren't as obscure and they actually have a new album coming out this Valentine's Day. They've got some weird songs and it's kind of hard to fit them into a specific genre. Here are some of my favourites though:

Sugar Water (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN9auBn6Jys)
Spoon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdxnvpSRP4Y)
King of Silence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KJWIixlQCE)

Now you guys post something.

I dun really listen to bands that are unaffiliated with video games.
And most people kinda already know them...

But the bands I posted are affiliated with video games. Well, the first band more than the second.

Are you thinking of bands like Crush 40 that are more known for their videogame soundtracks than their other songs?

Pretty much

So you don't listen to any non-gaming bands at all? That's kinda odd.

I listen to individual music pieces that catch my ear, I'm not really following any specific band.

The last time I remember doing that was with Linkin Park many years ago.

Well then you should. You could end up discovering many more songs you like. Like I said in the OP, many of the bands that I like I first heard in JSRF. For a long time I didn't seek out any of their other works and I just listened to their one or two songs in the game. When I did eventually look for their other works I ended up discovering many more great songs that I never would have heard if I hadn't sought them out.

Yay, my music thread is actually being used. I guess I'll post something else to celebrate.

One Block Radius weren't featured in a Jet Set Radio game but two of it's members were a part of Scapegoat Wax, a group whose song Aisle 10 was featured in JSRF.

Here's another one. These guys weren't even in a Jet Set Radio game so I don't know where I heard them from. Their band name is OK so it's incredibly hard to find any of their stuff. I think they briefly changed their name to Flying Car Company which is an even worse name.

I dunno if "soothing" is the right word to use, but I really like this band's stuff, so thanks for that.

I dunno how well known this guy is, seeing that this song was in a popular cartoon, but I dun see much people talk about him, so here's my pick

Good, I was hoping that this thread would help people discover new bands that they like. Here are a few more songs by that band. (http://okband.bandcamp.com/album/under-the-weather-but-over-the-moon)

Here's another band that appeared in JSRF, bis. They're kinda a guilty pleasure of mine because their early stuff is sorta bubblegum pop-ish and that's their only stuff that I like. They broke up years ago but apparently they're back together and coming out with a new album.

Well at least now I can double post without this one being merged with my last one.

The Fratellis had a song that appeared in an iPod commercial, but besides that I don't think they're too well known. Their albums have gone downhill since their first one though.

But this has to be my favorite song he's ever done:

Disregarding that, however, I just recently stumbled upon this and loved it. I doubt she counts as a band but this has got to be one of, if not my absolute, favorite genre of music. I wish it had a name.

I wish there was a better recording, though. This seems to be the only one...

I discovered Makoto Kawamoto after I found out that she collaborated with Guitar Vader, one of the bands I posted in the OP. The song that they collaborated on was a rock song though, and I was surprised to learn that all of her other songs are pop songs. For whatever reason though I still really like her stuff. She's most known for doing the opening theme for the Rurouni Kenshin anime. I figured I'd post this since jkid might like her stuff.

Well, I listen to music too.

Anyone heard of Cake? They aren't mega popular, but they have a unique combination of Rock, Punk Rock, Pop, Classic Rock, and you could say techno.

A couple songs by them you probably have heard:

Palm of Your Hand
Short Skirt/Long Jacket
Going the Distance

Now go listen to their newer and older albums! The lead singer has a beard for God's sake!

Serani Poji are a group that originally came together to make music for the Dreamcast game ROOMMANIA #203 (one of the members previously composed music for Ristar and NiGHTS) but eventually went on to become their own band and release their own albums.

The Zombies are a band that originally formed in 1962 but broke up in 1968 after not being very successful. However, they have since gained a cult following which motivated them to reunited in 1990 and release a couple of new albums. Those new albums were pretty mediocre, but that doesn't matter. What matters is their '60s output which is great.

Chappie is a persona pop artist, kinda like Hatsune Miku except the singers are all real people. The Chappie character itself is unisex (although it seems like mostly female artists do the voice) and takes on many different clothing and hair styles. Some of the other artists I posted about previously contributed Chappie songs like Guitar Vader, Cecil, and Makoto Kawamoto. It's kinda fascinating that some of my favourite Japanese artists contributed to the same project.

Everyday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWT6GRBuAuk)
Docu-mentary Kiss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dlHGqhUKpU) (I already posted this one as a Guitar Vader song but it deserves to be posted twice)
Good Day Afternoon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_gZNcZCL-c) (this one is a cover by a different band because I couldn't find the original on Youtube)

Neither did I, but that was the only problem I had with it.

Also this is that new theme for anyone that cares:

American Spring were a '70s female pop duo who only put out a single album before breaking up. The album was produced by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys (since he was married to one of the girls in the band) and most of the songs are covers of songs by the Beach Boys or other artists. There's still some original material in there, and the album as a whole is pretty good.

Fighting the problems of the 3DS to tell you pansies of Blind Gaurdian which is quite honestly one of the best bands I've found in awhile. Nightfall's chorus sold me on them alone.

Scandal are an all-girls Japanese rock band that formed when all of the members were still teenagers. Apparently they're pretty popular in Japan, but I live in Canada so they totally still count as obscure here. I first discovered them when I found out that their manager also helped with the production of Guitar Vader's later albums, and Guitar Vader are one of my favourite bands ever so I figured I'd give Scandal a shot. Well, I was probably misguided to think that Scandal would be anywhere near as good as Guitar Vader just because they shared a manager, but I still like a bunch of their songs.

Flipper's Guitar were a Japanese duo who helped pioneer the Shibuya-kei genre. Their music certainly sounds very modern compared to other music that came out in the late '80s and early '90s. Good music to chill out to.

The Feelies are an American band who formed in the late '70s and are considered to be very influential in the indie rock scene. They broke up in the '90s after releasing 4 albums but reunited 15 years later and released another album.

The Pastels are a Scottish band that formed in the late '80s. They were a fairly influential band in the indie pop scene and apparently even Kurt Cobain was a fan of them. Can't say I would have guessed that considering the kind of music they made. They became inactive in the late '90s but recently reunited to release another album that's fairly meh to be honest.

Indie bands are basically just bands that aren't signed to a major record label. Indie pop and American pop aren't really genres of music, they're just kinda identifiers that tell you what a band or artist is like.

And I do like pop music. Whether it's from an indie band or a top 40 band doesn't really have an effect on whether I like their music or not (although my musical tastes do tend to lean towards lesser-known bands).

Pop is a genre, but indie pop and American pop aren't. Okay, technically indie pop is a genre of music but I prefer not to use it like that.

Jim Sullivan was a singer-songwriter who released an album about U.F.O.'s before mysteriously disappearing in the New Mexico desert. Spooky, huh? Okay, there's more to the story than that. He actually disappeared a few years after releasing that album, and he released a second lesser-known album in between then. Most people who know of him only know him for the conspiracy (if you can call it that) around his disappearance, but he actually wrote really good music. Maybe that's why aliens abducted him.

The City were a band lead by Carole King, her soon-to-be husband (and now ex-husband), and Danny Kortchmar (who wrote songs for other big artists). They only released one album before disbanding. Carole King later went on to become a successful solo artist, but this is one of my favourite albums that she's ever worked on. Definitely better than the majority of her solo stuff.

Casiopea is a Japanese jazz fusion band that was formed in 1976 by guitarist Issei Noro, bassist Tetsuo Sakurai and keyboardist Hidehiko Koike. In 1977, keyboardist Minoru Mukaiya and drummer Takashi Sasaki joined the group, leaving Hidehiko out of Casiopea. The group debuted with the self-titled album Casiopea in 1979, featuring Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker and David Sanborn as guest musicians. In 1980, Sasaki was replaced by Akira Jimbo. Casiopea has released over 35 albums to date in both Japan and the United States.

advantage Lucy are a Japanese pop band who formed in the mid-'90s. They originally went by the name Lucy Van Pelt, after the Peanuts character, but had to change their name due to trademark infringement. Their songs are cheerful and relaxing, and they occasionally sing in English (although it's often hard to understand what they're saying due to the vocalist's accent and the way she sometimes whispers her words).
